Question:

I was at church yesterday and the topic was "Root Causes of Sin." My marriage didn't start well. Prior to getting married, I fornicated with another man. When I found out that my ex-husband was having an affair, hesaid he had affairs because of what happened prior to our marriage. Now that I've heard a sermon on the "root causes of sin," ismy ex-husbandright that the adultery that he committed is at the root my fault? I'm confused.

Thank you.

Answer:

"The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself" (Ezekiel 18:20).

The choice to sin is the individual's decision and, therefore, the individual's responsibility. Your husband may have been upset by your past sins, but that doesn't excuse his choice. No one made him sin. He chose to sin and his reasoning was pitiful at best.
